Established in 1957 West Hatch High School stands as a beacon of education in Chigwell. It is located in the Epping Forest district of Essex. The school’s name has an interesting origin. It comes from its location near the western gate or hatch into Hainault Forest.

West Hatch High School has grown and evolved over the years. Originally a four-storied building it has expanded into seven main teaching buildings. Major renovations have modernized the facilities. These include a Maths Dining and Drama Block built in 1999. The Ruby Theatre followed in 2000. Students attaining Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award status built it. A Sixth Form Centre music suite and business block soon appeared. A Science block Design and Technology block and a four-story classroom block were added.

The school’s commitment to innovation is clear. ICT infrastructure upgrades allowed evening classes. Microsoft Digital Literacy training became available for parents. A new swimming pool replaced the old one in 2010. It was named the Race Pool after a former teacher. A sports hall and classroom block opened in 2021. Frances Howarth a former headteacher of West Hatch for over 18 years returned to open Howarth Hall.

West Hatch High School is more than just buildings and facilities. It is a community of learners. The school educates around 1300 students. These come from the local area. Nearly 200 sixth form pupils join from North East London and West Essex. West Hatch became a business and enterprise specialist school in 2002.

Many notable people have walked the halls of West Hatch. Sally Gunnell Olympic gold medalist attended here. Kate Silverton a BBC newsreader is an alumna. Joey Essex a reality TV personality also studied here. Richard Jones a Britain’s Got Talent winner is another successful graduate. Sonny Jay Capital Breakfast host and Britain’s Got Talent finalist went to West Hatch. Vicki Michelle actress is also a former pupil. The school has nurtured talent in various fields.

West Hatch High School has a motto that encapsulates its spirit. “The Best That I Can Be – Manu et Mente” meaning “By Hand and By Mind”. It reflects the school’s commitment to holistic education. The school aims to develop students intellectually and practically.

West Hatch High School is a non-selective academy. It provides education for boys and girls between 11 and 18. In November 2023 Ofsted rated the school as ‘Good’. The school demonstrates particular strengths in attendance disadvantaged pupils attainment and progress. West Hatch High School continues to shape the lives of its students.
