West Hampstead Primary School

Opened in 1886 as Broomsleigh Street School West Hampstead Primary School boasts a rich history. Initially it had an entrance on Broomsleigh Street. The school’s name changed in 1929 to Beckford Primary School. This was named after William Beckford a former London mayor whose wealth originated from the slave trade. Imagine the discussions and debates that must have accompanied this name change. In September 2021 after a vote involving staff and the local community the school was renamed West Hampstead Primary School. This reflects the strong connection to the local area. The building itself a beautiful Victorian three-storey structure is a listed building. It stands as a testament to the school’s enduring presence in the community. West Hampstead Primary School is more than just a building. It’s a place where generations of children have learned and grown. Recently the school unveiled a mural honoring Dr Beryl Gilroy. She was the first Black woman to be a headteacher in Camden. Dr Gilroy paved the way for people of color in education.
