West Footscray Post Office opened on April 15 1914. This marked a significant step in the suburb’s development. It provided essential communication services to the growing community. West Footscray has a population of 11729 residents as of the 2021 census.
Barkly Village is a notable section of Barkly Street. It showcases West Footscray’s multiculturalism. Here you will find a variety of grocers stores and shops owned by people from diverse backgrounds. These include Indian Vietnamese Chinese Anglo Thai and Italian Australians. Bharat Traders is a particularly large Indian grocery store. Sims a local independent supermarket is also located here. The Melbourne Chinese Bible Church adds to the area’s cultural richness.
The Whitten Oval is an important landmark in West Footscray. It serves as the training ground for the Western Bulldogs. The Western Bulldogs are an AFL team. Before moving to Marvel Stadium the Whitten Oval was their home ground. This oval has a long history of Australian Rules football.
The Western General Hospital plays a crucial role in the community’s healthcare. While technically in Footscray many locals consider it part of West Footscray. The hospital’s Emergency and Triage entrances are on Eleanor Street. The Western Private Hospital is adjacent to the Western Hospital. It is located on the corner of Eleanor and Marion Streets. A concentration of private medical practices are on Eleanor Street and Stanlake Street.
West Footscray has several educational facilities. These include the West Footscray Neighbourhood House Scots’ Kindergarten and Kingsville Kindergarten. There are also two primary schools. These are Footscray West Primary School and St John’s Primary School. St John’s is a Catholic school. Corpus Christi Catholic School is another Catholic school in the Kingsville area.
The Western Scout Centre is in West Footscray. It serves as a training facility for adult volunteers in Scouts Australia. The Footscray Rotary Club donated equipment to the center.
West Footscray has excellent transport links. Several bus routes pass through the suburb. These include routes 216 219 220 411 412 and 414. West Footscray and Tottenham are the two railway stations. They both lie on the Sunbury line. The West Footscray station was rebuilt. It was moved 200 meters west of its original location. This was part of the Regional Rail Link project. A third platform was built on the Cross Street side.
Shorten Reserve is home to the Druids Cricket Club. It is also home to the West Footscray Roosters. They are a local Australian Rules Football team. Johnson Reserve is the home ground for a local soccer team. The North Footscray Devils are also located there.
Phat Quang Temple adds to the suburb’s cultural diversity. It is a Vietnamese Buddhist temple.
In 2018 a large industrial fire occurred in West Footscray. It involved the illegal storage of chemicals. This resulted in environmental damage. It also caused health issues. The fire took sixteen days to extinguish. Dead fish and wildlife were found around Stony Creek.
West Footscray Community Centre was recently completed. It includes a local library. This replaced the former West Footscray Library. The new center is part of the Barkly Village strip.
