Can a single street transport you to Southeast Asia? In the heart of Chicago’s Uptown, the West Argyle Street Historic District, also known as “Little Saigon,” does just that. The West Argyle Street Historic District isn’t just a collection of buildings. It’s a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of Vietnamese, Cambodian, Laotian, and Thai cultures. Officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010, this 41-acre district pulsates with life between North Glenwood Avenue, Winona Street, Sheridan Road, and Ainslie Street. Originally developed in the 1880s as the suburb of Argyle Park, named after the Scottish Dukes of Argyll, it became part of Chicago in 1889. The arrival of the ‘L’ train in 1908 made it a popular residential area. The West Argyle Street Historic District’s transformation into an Asian hub began in the 1960s when restaurateur Jimmy Wong envisioned a “New Chinatown.” Although his initial plans were stalled, Charlie Soo, founder of the Asian American Small Business Association, revitalized the vision in the 1970s. Soo’s tireless efforts, including establishing the annual “Taste of Argyle” festival, earned him the title of “Mayor of Argyle Street.” He helped shape the district into the vibrant cultural melting pot it is today, with a mix of businesses reflecting the diverse Asian community. The West Argyle Street Historic District blossomed into a pan-Asian community. Vietnamese restaurants and bakeries mingle with Chinese, Cambodian, Laotian, and Thai businesses, all centered around the Argyle ‘L’ station. The district’s rich history is further layered by its past as a silent film production center. The Essanay Studios, once located here, produced films starring Charlie Chaplin, including the iconic “The Tramp.” Today, St. Augustine College occupies the former studio, a reminder of the area’s cinematic legacy. As you stroll along Argyle Street, breathe in the aroma of pho and banh mi. Admire the colorful storefronts. Listen to the chatter in multiple languages. The West Argyle Street Historic District is more than just a neighborhood. It’s a portal to another world, a testament to the power of community and cultural preservation in the heart of Chicago.
