Wesley United Methodist Church

The Wesley United Methodist Church, a beacon of faith on Chicago’s South Side, stands proudly at 201 East 95th Street. Founded in 1954 in the home of Mrs. Annie Potter, it began as a small congregation with Reverend James W.E. Mitchell as their pastor. The first building was erected at 212 East 95th Street in 1959, under the leadership of Reverend Scye McWilliams, though he sadly passed away before its completion. The congregation moved into the newly constructed building in 1964. A pivotal moment arrived in 1968 when The Methodist and The Evangelical United Brethren Churches merged to form The United Methodist Church denomination, leading to the official name change to Wesley United Methodist Church. The church faced challenges, including the devastating loss of their beloved pastor, Reverend McWilliams, and the eventual need for a larger building to accommodate their growing membership. This need resulted in the construction of the very building you stand before today. It’s a testament to perseverance and community spirit.
