Who would have thought a former swampland could become a vibrant community? Right here, at Wesley Bay, the story of this Auckland suburb unfolds. Wesley Bay isn’t a typical bay with sandy shores. Instead, it’s a residential area carved out of what was once known as the Mission Swamp. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, this land belonged to the Wesleyan Mission. The landscape changed dramatically in the mid-20th century when the New Zealand Government stepped in. They transformed Wesley Bay into a state housing area during the 1940s and 1950s. This area experienced significant flooding from Oakley Creek in 1948 and 1953. This prompted the Mount Roskill Borough Council to invest heavily in flood prevention measures. Today, Wesley Bay is a diverse community. The Oakley Creek, once a source of flooding, now flows peacefully through several parks. These parks include War Memorial Park, Walmsley Park, and Underwood Park. A modern landmark graces Wesley Bay: the Wesley Community Centre. Opened in 2003, its innovative design garnered recognition from the New Zealand Institute of Architects and the Concrete Society. The community also boasts two schools. Wesley Primary School, opened in 1951, and Wesley Intermediate School, which followed in 1953. They serve as testaments to the growth and development of Wesley Bay. From swampland to a thriving suburb, Wesley Bay’s journey reflects Auckland’s dynamic history.
