Hidden along Bremen’s Weser River lies Weseruferpark, a place reclaimed from the past. Did you know this tranquil park was once the site of the 13th-century village of Lankenau? The village was leveled to make way for the Neustadt Harbor. The dredging of the Weser River left behind mounds of sand, five to seven meters deep, which formed the foundation of what would become Weseruferpark. In the 1970s, architect Karl-Georg Lindenlaub transformed this sandy expanse into a 22-hectare haven. Weseruferpark officially opened in 1974. As you stroll through the park, notice the maritime relics scattered throughout. Anchors, ship propellers, buoys, and navigational markers whisper tales of Bremen’s seafaring past. These remnants serve as a reminder of the area’s rich maritime history. The park’s biodiversity is remarkable. 112 species from 32 families thrive here, adding a touch of wildness to this man-made oasis. The path leads to the Lankenauer Höft, a former harbor building now transformed into a restaurant. Here, you can savor local cuisine while enjoying sweeping views of the river. Weseruferpark also boasts a 300-meter-long sandy beach opened in 2009, perfect for relaxing and soaking up the sun. Nearby, a small iron cog, crafted by Hans-Dieter Tietjen, marks the spot where the Bremen Cog, a medieval trading vessel dating back to 1380, was discovered. The original cog is now on display at the German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven. For those seeking a bit more activity, there’s an 18-hole disc golf course. The course is open to the public, offering a unique recreational experience within the park’s serene setting. From a forgotten village to a vibrant park, Weseruferpark’s transformation speaks to Bremen’s ability to honor its past while embracing the future. It’s a testament to the city’s resilience and its commitment to creating spaces where history and nature intertwine.
