Picture this a tranquil island nestled in the heart of the Weser River. This is the Weserdeicher Sände a unique natural haven. It’s a haven protected from the relentless march of development.

The Weserdeicher Sände isn’t just one island. It’s a collection of smaller islands. Tegelsand Ruschsand and Rönnebecker Sand. These formed over time creating the larger Weserdeicher Sände. The name itself hints at this multiple-island formation.

Unlike its neighbours Juliusplate and Elsflether Sand the Weserdeicher Sände retained its island status. This was a deliberate choice. Protecting its unique ecosystem was prioritized over land reclamation.

The Weser River’s powerful tides play a vital role. Smaller waterways within the island’s interior dry up during low tide. They are revived during the high tide. The Kleine Loch a remnant of a former Weser arm is a prime example. It’s a small lake and a drainage channel that ebbs and flows with the river’s rhythm.

Much of the Weserdeicher Sände is ringed by summer dikes. This allows for agricultural use. Cattle graze peacefully on the island’s pastures. Hay meadows wave in the breeze. Some bushes and shrubs provide a touch of natural wildness. Two pump stations drain the cultivated areas into the Westergate a parallel waterway.

The northern part of the Weserdeicher Sände has a unique history. It was raised to summer dike level. This was part of a compensation measure. This compensated for the deepening of the Lower Weser. A tide-dependent shallow-water zone was created. It connects to the Westergate. A similar zone is planned for the south.

The only way to reach the Weserdeicher Sände is by a ford. This ford is located southwestward at the transition of the Woltjenloch into the Westergate. It’s a reminder of a simpler time. A time where nature’s rhythm dictated accessibility.

Most of the Weserdeicher Sände belongs to Berne a municipality in the Lower Saxony district of Wesermarsch. A small strip of land on the main riverbank however belongs to Bremen’s Blumenthal district. This creates a curious border. A border that highlights the shared history. A shared history that runs deeper than the Weser’s tides. The Weserdeicher Sände remains a beautiful mystery. A beautiful mystery in the heart of the Weser River. A true testament to nature’s enduring power.
