The imposing structure before you is the Werner-Heisenberg-Schule. This isn’t just any school. It’s a Leipzig landmark steeped in history.

Built between 1896 and 1912 it first served as the 39th elementary school. Later it became the 39th Polytechnic Secondary School. In 1974 it even split into two schools the 39th and the 139th. Imagine the students then. What were their lives like?

Extensive renovations took place between 1989 and 1992. The building reopened in 1992 as the 39th school a gymnasium this time. Then in 1994 it was renamed the Werner-Heisenberg-Schule. A fitting tribute to a Nobel Prize winner.

Why Heisenberg? Well Werner Heisenberg a renowned German physicist taught at Leipzig University starting in 1927. He’s considered the founder of quantum mechanics. Winning the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1932. The school’s name reflects its focus on science. A nod to the school’s commitment to scientific excellence.

The Werner-Heisenberg-Schule isn’t just about the past. Between 2008 and 2010 a modern sports complex was added. Complete with a student cafeteria. That’s quite an upgrade from the school’s early days.

Today the Werner-Heisenberg-Schule continues to educate and inspire. It’s a testament to Leipzig’s commitment to education and its rich scientific heritage.
