In 1350, it was just “Werlicz,” a simple name for a simple village. Today, we stand in Werlitzsch, a village northwest of Schkeuditz, in the district of Nordsachsen. Werlitzsch whispers stories of centuries past. Its history stretches back to a time when the landscape was dominated by sprawling Gewannflur fields. These fields, covering 399 hectares, defined the lives of the villagers who toiled upon them. Imagine Werlitzsch in 1551. Twenty-three men, the “besessene Mann,” or those possessing land, worked alongside 17 inhabitants, cultivating the five Hufen, a medieval unit of land measurement. Fast forward to 1747, and the village had grown. Twenty “besessene Mann” now worked the land with five gardeners, their livelihoods still intertwined with the 15 1/2 Hufen. Werlitzsch wasn’t just about farming. It was a community with deep spiritual roots. By 1608, the villagers looked to the nearby Glesien for their spiritual guidance, the church there serving as their parish. This connection remained strong through the centuries, recorded in 1816 and again in 1925. Even in 1925, the majority of the 178 villagers, 174 to be exact, identified as Evangelisch-uniert, with a small minority of 4 adhering to the Roman Catholic faith. Werlitzsch’s story is etched in the names it has borne. From “Werlicz” and “Werlitsch” in 1350, the name evolved, finally settling as “Werlitzsch” by 1495. Through changing times, Werlitzsch remained tied to the administrative region of Delitzsch, a connection documented from 1378 onwards. From the “castrum Delitzsch” in 1378 to the “Kreis Delitzsch” in 1816 and beyond, Werlitzsch’s fate was linked to this larger entity. Even in the modern era, as administrative boundaries shifted, Werlitzsch remained within the sphere of Delitzsch, becoming part of the “Landkreis Delitzsch” in 1952, 1994, and ultimately the “Landkreis Nordsachsen” in 2008. Werlitzsch’s story is one of quiet perseverance. A small village, rooted in the land, with a history that whispers through the centuries.
