What secrets do old factory walls hold? Today, we stand before WerkStadt Sendling, a place where the aroma of tobacco once filled the air. WerkStadt Sendling wasn’t always a hub for trendy offices and startups. It began its life in the late 19th century as the G. Zuban Munich Royal Bavarian Court Cigarette Factory. This factory, a bustling hive of activity, churned out millions of hand-rolled cigarettes and cigars. Over the years, the factory changed hands, becoming part of larger tobacco empires, until finally falling silent in 2008. Imagine the rhythmic clatter of machinery and the deft hands of workers, now replaced by the quiet hum of laptops and the murmur of brainstorming sessions. In 2011, a transformation began. The old factory buildings, steeped in history, were reborn as WerkStadt Sendling, a modern complex for businesses and residents. But the story doesn’t end there. As a tribute to the site’s artistic spirit, a stunning 260 square meter graffiti mural, created by the urban art duo “Low Bros,” adorns one of the buildings. WerkStadt Sendling is a testament to Munich’s ability to adapt and reinvent itself, seamlessly blending the past with the present.
