Picture the Gaststätte Fraunhofer. Its history whispers from the very wood of its interior. This isn’t just any tavern. It’s a Munich landmark a place where time seems to slow its relentless march.

The Gaststätte Fraunhofer has stood on Fraunhoferstraße since at least 1774. It’s seen countless faces. Countless stories have unfolded within its walls. The building itself has a story to tell. It began life in a simpler classical style. Then in 1890-1891 it was expanded and transformed. The architect Thomas Steinbauer gave it a Neurenaissance makeover. Five years later the interior was completely redone. The stunning Neubaroque style we see today was created then. That’s a remarkable survival in a city that constantly rebuilds.

The Gaststätte Fraunhofer’s current interior is a time capsule. The woodwork the stunning stucco its very layout are largely untouched since 1896. Think about that. Most historic buildings in big cities see their interiors modernized. Competition for customers means change. But the Gaststätte Fraunhofer’s interior resisted that tide. The original tables and chairs remain. They are made of untreated wood blending seamlessly with the historic surroundings. It’s a testament to the enduring value of craftsmanship and a love for history.

The Spatenbrauerei has owned the Gaststätte Fraunhofer since 1905. Even more interesting is a little-known fact. A room was reserved for members of the Turonia student fraternity from 1915 onwards. World War II damaged the building. The facade was later rebuilt in a simplified form.

The Gaststätte Fraunhofer’s story isn’t just about beer and history. It’s a story of community. It’s a place where a small theatre a renowned alternative cinema even a yearly folk music award show have found a home. Since 1974 the Theater im Fraunhofer has thrived. It was co-founded by “Beppi” Bachmaier the tavern’s long-time owner. Next door since 1976 lies the Werkstattkino. It started in the tavern’s former bowling alley. This unique cinema showcases films you won’t find anywhere else.
