From swampy beginnings to a modern marvel, Wenya in Jurong West has undergone a dramatic transformation. Wenya was once known as Bulim, a name tied to its past as a slum and the site of the Bulim Hill Cemetery. Imagine this area in the 1980s, a place of rest for generations, making way for progress. The construction of the Kranji and Pan Island Expressways necessitated the closure and exhumation of the cemetery, forever changing the landscape and dividing the Bulim estate. Wenya, the western section, became a subzone of Jurong West, embarking on its new identity. The 1990s saw the rise of residential developments in Wenya. The first two housing estates welcomed residents in 2000 and 2002. Corporation Primary School and Westwood Secondary School relocated here in 2001, solidifying Wenya as a community. But the story takes another turn. In 2007, Wenya’s destiny shifted from residential haven to industrial powerhouse. The eastern part of Wenya became the Wenya Industrial Park, a key component of the “2 West Integrated industrial township.” This township also includes the prestigious Nanyang Technological University (NTU), CleanTech Park, and a part of Tengah, weaving Wenya into a network of innovation and progress. Even the streets of Wenya carry a story. Originally named Wenya Avenue and Wenya Street, they were renamed Bulim Avenue and Bulim Street in 2014, a nod to the area’s history. Today, Wenya balances its industrial identity with residential life and community spaces. From a forgotten slum to a vibrant part of Singapore, Wenya’s journey is a testament to the ever-evolving nature of this dynamic city.
