Nestled within the Lennebergwald, just beyond Mainz-Gonsenheim, stand the Wendelinuskapellen. These two chapels, dedicated to Saint Wendelin, offer a glimpse into the devotion and traditions of the Budenheim community. The Wendelinuskapelle, the newer of the two, was completed in 1866. It stands as a testament to the generosity of the Budenheim citizens. They funded its construction in the prevalent neo-Gothic style of the time. The older Wendelinuskapelle, smaller and simpler, dates back to 1776. It replaced an even earlier chapel on the same spot. This older chapel was also dedicated to Saint Wendelin. It was likely built in response to a devastating outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease among local livestock. Saint Wendelin is the patron saint of shepherds and farmers. This makes him a natural choice for protection against such calamities. The older Wendelinuskapelle boasts a late Baroque style. The year 1814 is inscribed above its entrance. This marks not the year of its construction but rather a significant renovation. Every year, on the third Sunday of October, the Wendelinuskapellen become the focal point of the Budenheimer Wendelinus pilgrimage. Pilgrims and locals gather to honor the saint and seek his blessings. Nearby, though technically just across the border in Mainz, stands the Wendelinusheim. Once a Catholic youth center, it is now privately owned. Its history intertwines with that of the chapels, adding another layer to this story of faith and community.
