Ever wonder how a library started in a closet? The Wells Branch Community Library, right here before us, has a truly unique origin story. It began in a humble closet inside the Wells Branch Methodist Church. On September 12, 1998, the Wells Branch Community Library opened its doors. It was a small operation, fueled by the dedication of local volunteers and stocked with donated books. The community rallied to bring this vital resource to life. The library quickly outgrew its closet-sized home. It moved to Bratton Square in February 1999. The new space allowed for computers, summer reading programs, and the beloved Polar Express Pajamarama. The collection expanded to include audiobooks and movies, first on VHS, then DVDs. Even with 2,700 square feet, the Wells Branch Community Library needed more room to grow. The library broke ground on its current building, here on Wells Port Drive, on February 1, 2003. The doors to this 16,000 square foot space officially opened on December 8th of that year. Today, the Wells Branch Community Library boasts over 55,000 physical items and thousands more digital resources. It’s open seven days a week, hosting concerts, special programs, book clubs, and early literacy activities. In 2017 alone, it welcomed over 110,000 visitors. From a closet in a church to this bustling hub of learning and community, the Wells Branch Community Library is a testament to the power of local dedication and the enduring love of stories.
