Gazing up at the Wellington Statue, have you ever noticed how much pavement it takes up? This bronze behemoth of the Duke of Wellington and his rearing horse dominates the east end of Princes Street. It’s not just a statue; it’s a landmark, a traffic obstacle, and a source of local debate since its inauguration in 1852. The Wellington Statue commemorates the Duke’s victory over Napoleon at Waterloo. It was sculpted by John Steell, a prominent Scottish artist who captured the Iron Duke’s commanding presence. The statue itself is impressive, measuring 13 feet long and 6 feet wide. But it’s the massive granite plinth that has caused controversy. It hogs a significant portion of the pavement on Princes Street, Edinburgh’s busiest thoroughfare. Imagine the foot traffic, the daily hustle and bustle, and this imposing monument right in the middle of it all. As early as 1892, architect George Shaw Aitken complained about the statue’s placement. He argued that it obstructed pedestrians and clashed with the elegant proportions of Register House, the building behind it. Aitken suggested moving the statue to Holyrood Palace, West Princes Street Gardens, or Castle Street. His calls went unheeded. The debate flared up again in 1934. Councillor Nelson called it “an impediment to pedestrian traffic”. The Transport Committee supported its removal to make way for a new tramway island. Councillor Hardie agreed, suggesting it be moved to Calton Hill, near the Nelson Monument. But others fiercely defended the statue. Councillor Darling called its removal an “act of vandalism”. Councillor Ritchie emphasized its status as a well-known landmark and “work of art”, claiming there was plenty of space for pedestrians. Despite the ongoing debate, the Wellington Statue has remained stubbornly in place. It continues to “hog the pavement,” a testament to its historical significance and the enduring debate it sparks. It’s a quirky Edinburgh landmark that reminds us that even in the grand sweep of history, sometimes the most memorable figures are those who take up a little too much space.
