Opened in April 1974 the Wellington Hospital South Building stands proudly. It’s the largest private hospital in the United Kingdom. This impressive structure wasn’t always here. Dr Arthur Levin envisioned a modern flagship private hospital. His dream led to the commissioning of this building by British and Commonwealth Holdings.

Architect Fred Woodhead designed the South Building. He had a vision. He wanted to create a healing environment. His design incorporated single rooms and four-bed wards. This was a radical departure from the large wards and long corridors typical of hospitals at the time. The South Building’s ziggurat shape maximizes natural light in each patient room.

The Wellington Hospital South Building wasn’t alone for long. The North Building opened in 1978 also designed by Woodhead. It too features a stepped design. Over the years the hospital expanded. The Wellington Diagnostics and Outpatients Centre opened in 2007. A Platinum Medical Centre specializing in oncology followed in 2011.

Many notable patients have walked these halls. John Spencer father of Diana Princess of Wales passed away here in 1992. Broadcaster Sir Robin Day also died at the hospital in 2000. Even Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins received treatment here after an overdose. Rally driver Richard Burns tragically succumbed to brain cancer in 2005. Prince Friso of Orange-Nassau received treatment here after an avalanche. Peter O’Toole a renowned actor also died at the Wellington Hospital.

Today the Wellington Hospital South Building continues to provide exceptional care. It offers cardiac services neurosurgery and more. It’s a testament to Dr Levin’s vision. It is also a monument to the skilled architects and medical professionals who have served within its walls. The Wellington Hospital South continues to be a beacon of hope and healing in London.
