The scent of old wood and aged stone hangs in the air. This is the Wekerletelepi református templom. A truly unique building.

Built between 1924 and 1928 this Reformed Church stands as a testament to the community’s unwavering faith and dedication. It wasn’t just built it was painstakingly created. Local residents contributed enormously. They even received state land bricks and favourable loans.

The Wekerletelepi református templom’s design is distinctive. It doesn’t fit neatly into any single architectural style. It’s a one-of-a-kind creation. Positioned where three streets meet it boasts a main entrance and two side entrances. Its hexagonal tower soars thirty meters high seamlessly integrated with the church itself.

Inside the Wekerletelepi református templom you’ll find history echoing in every detail. The two bells in the tower each tell a story. The smaller bell cast in Holland in 1933 was a gift from Katalin Kuyper. She was a fervent supporter of Hungarian Reformed congregations. The larger bell created by Slezák Rafael in Rákospalota in 1948 adds to the rich sonic tapestry of the church.

Opposite the main entrance lies the liturgical space. Here stands the pulpit originally designed without a soundboard. Later additions included side galleries flanking the pulpit. The sanctuary seats three hundred worshippers. In 1965 a congregation hall and a classroom were added behind the pulpit.

The Wekerletelepi református templom is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living monument. It represents the spirit of a community that built a beautiful house of God. This was accomplished through hard work sacrifice and unwavering faith. It also showcases the remarkable architectural ingenuity of Benedikty Sándor whose designs shaped this unique building. It’s a place where the past present and future of faith intertwine. A truly special place. The church’s exterior and interior were renovated extensively between 1997 and 2001. A new parsonage was constructed. A two-manual electro-pneumatic organ gifted by Dutch brethren now graces the church’s interior.

This church is a testament to the enduring spirit of Wekerletelep. Take a moment breathe in the history and appreciate the dedication that created the Wekerletelepi református templom.
