From a simple apartment to a vibrant hub, the Wekerlei Kultúrház és Könyvtár’s story is woven into the fabric of Wekerletelep. This building, established in 1911, stands as a testament to the community’s enduring spirit. Originally, Wekerletelep’s architectural blueprints lacked a designated library space. Residents relied on school and church libraries. The Wekerlei Könyvtár, part of the Wekerlei Kultúrház és Könyvtár, began its life in 1961 in a former ground-floor apartment. Its street-facing entrance, a converted section of the building’s facade, once served a grocer and later a dairy shop. This modest space became a vital resource. However, during the 1990s, the library faced closure due to its small size. Wekerle residents rallied against this, their determination saving this beloved institution. In 1994, the local government took over, attaching it to the Wekerlei Kultúrház (then the Wekerlei Gyermekház). The library reopened on March 15, 1995. Its collection, nearly 9,000 books strong, focuses on children’s literature, parenting, environmental studies, adult fiction, bestsellers, and local history. The library hosts several clubs like the Wekerlei Világjárók, Versbarátok Klubja, and Péntek Esti Mesék. A unique feature is the “Tégy egy könyvet – Végy egy könyvet!” street-side book exchange cabinet, constantly replenished by the community. A 2010 grant significantly modernized the library, introducing digital services and a digital lending system. The Wekerlei Kultúrház és Könyvtár plays a central role in the community. It offers a range of activities, including children’s theater performances, concerts, craft workshops, environmental awareness events, and themed gatherings. The Wekerlei Kultúrház also hosts various clubs like the Wekerlei Népdalkör, Foltvarró Klub, and Öko Baba-Mama Klub. These groups meet regularly, fostering community bonds within the vibrant atmosphere of the Wekerlei Kultúrház és Könyvtár.
