A whimsical fish tank mosaic greets you. Welcome to Weisman Park a vibrant green space in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood. This isn’t just any park. It’s a pocket of history a testament to community spirit and a playful haven for families.

Weisman Park though small only 0.4 acres boasts a rich history. Opened after World War II it was initially known as Oakdale Park. The city purchased the land in 1949 using Playground Bond funds. Imagine children playing amidst simpler playground equipment a spray pool and a sandbox. The park became what it is today in 1957 when the city transferred it to the Chicago Park District.

The park’s name changed in 1983. It was renamed to honor Albert Weisman a local resident and journalist. Weisman a St Louis native had a distinguished career. He worked for a major advertising firm and even served as the University of Chicago’s Director of Public Affairs. He was a passionate community member notably founding the Wellington-Oakdale Old Glory Marching Society. This unique society held Memorial Day parades. The motto? “Everyone marches nobody watches.” Quite a memorable legacy.

The playground itself is a delightful place. Recently renovated it features ADA-accessible play areas. There are swings a slide picnic tables drinking fountains and benches. The park offers plenty of shade and colorful flowers in the springtime. The mosaic fish tank adds a touch of artistry to this charming little park.

Notice the play structures. One is for younger children. The other is larger ideal for older kids. There’s even a water spray feature a triple water sprayer a “loch ness mister” and water jets. Your kids will love to splash around on hot summer days.

Weisman Park is more than just a playground. It’s a place where families gather. It’s a space that celebrates its past and embraces its future. It’s a small park with a big heart. Enjoy your time here in this little corner of Chicago’s history.
