A ribbon of turquoise against the Dresden sky. That’s the Weißenitztalbrücke. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s a marvel of engineering a vital artery connecting Dresden and Prague.

The Weißenitztalbrücke is part of a larger system. It’s a bridge-tunnel-bridge combination. This impressive structure spans the Plauenscher Grund a gorge carved by the Weißenitz River. The river itself marks the boundary between the districts of Dölschen and Coschütz. Imagine the challenges of constructing such a massive bridge in such a confined space.

Construction began in 2000. The project wasn’t without its difficulties. The narrow valley presented significant obstacles. Existing road and rail traffic couldn’t be significantly disrupted. The bridge was completed in 2002. Its opening was delayed until December 22 2004. A cable fire in the Coschützer Tunnel caused these delays. The final cost was 23 million Euros far exceeding the initial estimate of 15 million.

The Weißenitztalbrücke is a girder bridge. It’s made of steel and reinforced concrete. Its two sections each carry one direction of the Autobahn 17. The turquoise color is striking. It is also remarkably high reaching 28 meters above the valley floor. Each deck is 15 meters wide and 50 centimeters thick.

Architect Egon Jux designed the Weißenitztalbrücke. He was responsible for other notable bridges. The Hamburger Köhlbrandbrücke is one example. The Walter Bau AG oversaw the construction. They also built other sections of the A17. The Weißenitztalbrücke stands as a testament to German engineering.

The Weißenitztalbrücke more than just a bridge. It is a powerful symbol of connection. It connects not only Dresden and Prague. It also connects past and present innovation and history. Take a moment to appreciate this engineering masterpiece. This is the Weißenitztalbrücke a bridge that stands tall against the Dresden sky.
