Gazing at the Weinbergkirche “Zum Heiligen Geist”, have you ever wondered about its vibrant history? This Baroque village church, nestled in Dresden-Pillnitz, stands as a testament to resilience and artistry. Its name, meaning “Vineyard Church,” comes from its location within the Royal Vineyard. The Weinbergkirche “Zum Heiligen Geist” wasn’t the first church on this site. It replaced the Pillnitz Palace Church, demolished to make way for palace expansion. Augustus the Strong, known for his ambitious architectural projects, ordered its construction in 1723. He stipulated that materials from the old church, including the altar, bells, and organ, be reused. Designed by Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann, the architect of the Zwinger Palace, the Weinbergkirche is his earliest completed church. It’s considered a landmark of the Pillnitz landscape. The church, a rectangular structure with a hipped roof and central wooden cupola, features a sandstone sculpture above its main entrance. This sculpture, crafted by Johann Benjamin Thomae, displays the Saxon and Polish coats of arms, Augustus Rex’s monogram, and the royal crown. Inside, the Weinbergkirche “Zum Heiligen Geist” boasts an impressive interior. The altar, created in 1648 by Johann Georg Kretzschmar, depicts the Last Supper and the resurrected Christ. The church also houses numerous epitaphs and monuments. These commemorate members of the von Loss and von Bünau families, transferred from the old palace church. The church’s history has been one of renewal and restoration. After falling into disrepair, particularly in the late 20th century, it underwent extensive restoration in the 1990s. The Interessengemeinschaft Weinbergkirche Pillnitz played a crucial role in raising funds for this project. Today, the Weinbergkirche “Zum Heiligen Geist” serves as a place of worship, hosting occasional services, weddings, concerts, and exhibitions. It stands as a vibrant symbol of Pillnitz’s rich heritage, a beautiful blend of history, art, and community spirit. The Weinbergkirche continues to draw visitors. It offers a glimpse into the past and celebrates the enduring power of human creativity.
