Marvelous isn’t it? This is the Weidenschloss.

The Weidenschloss in Bremerhaven’s Speckenbüttel Park is no ordinary structure. It’s a living artwork a whimsical castle made entirely of willow branches. Imagine over 350 cubic meters of willow stems and branches woven together. That’s a lot of willow.

This unique building is the brainchild of Swiss action artist Marcel Kalberer. He’s the founder of the “Sanfte Strukturen” (Gentle Structures) art group. They create living buildings using natural materials. Kalberer envisioned a space for rest dreams and meditation. A place for music theater play and dance. Even celebrations.

The Weidenschloss wasn’t built by machines. No. Over 300 volunteers from all over Germany and Europe helped construct it. They worked for four weeks. They used not only willow but also 1000 meters of steel tube bracing 5000 meters of coconut rope and 1000 meters of polyester rope. Quite the team effort.

The Weidenschloss is impressive. It’s 22.5 meters in diameter. The central dome rises over 12 meters. Six smaller side domes surround it. The total area is approximately 320 square meters.

It was inaugurated in Easter 2003. It provides a cool retreat in the summer heat. It is a wonderful place to relax. Think of it. A haven for creative expression in a bustling park.

The Weidenschloss isn’t just a pretty sight. It’s a testament to community spirit and artistic vision. A living proof that remarkable things can be achieved with collaboration and imagination.

And what’s even more amazing? This organic masterpiece is estimated to last for approximately 100 years. So this incredible work of art will remain a Bremerhaven landmark for generations to come. Enjoy the Weidenschloss.
