Do you hear that sound? It is the whoosh of a disc sailing through the air at Weichsel Park. This 12.7-acre community park, established in 1948, is a haven for disc golf enthusiasts.
But Weichsel Park is more than just a green space. It is a place where community and recreation intertwine. Imagine yourself standing near the parking lot. A map kiosk and practice basket greet you. This signals the start of your disc golf adventure.
The park’s disc golf course was established in 2019. Matt Nestor, Jose Lopez, and Demetric Jackson designed it. It features nine holes with dynamic discs patriot targets. Mixed tees provide variety. Concrete tees mark the front nine. Dirt tees, indicated by wooden stakes, designate the back nine.
As you play, notice the rolling elevation and mixed foliage. Old growth trees dot the fields. A winding creek adds to the challenge. The course stretches 3037 feet. Alternate layouts extend it to 5318 feet. Most holes are under 300 feet but some range from 300 to 400 feet. A few exceed 400 feet.
Weichsel Park primarily plays through open fields. But some holes wind through moderately wooded areas. Dual tees create an 18-hole experience.
Be aware that Weichsel Park can be affected by its surroundings. After rains, standing water might pose an obstacle on early holes. Noise from Love Field Airport is common. The park is located half a mile south of the airport entrance. Transients sometimes loiter. They occasionally leave debris.
Despite these minor drawbacks, Weichsel Park offers a pleasant and relaxing challenge. The layout maximizes the land’s topography. Fairways wind around the park in surprising ways. Trees provide shade but not silence from overhead planes. A shallow creek divides the course. It adds an attractive obstacle. Elevation changes affect tee shots and approaches.
Hole two is a signature challenge. Its elevated tee shot carries over hole one’s green. Treetop branches guard the long fairway. Hole three requires a tricky tee shot. It is a hard dogleg right through trees. It goes over a depression around a warehouse.
Locals have added alternate tees marked by flags. These offer added variety. The first three holes feature elevated tee shots. They descend into a wide hollow. Rainfall can form a sprawling pool here.
Hole five crosses an open field to a basket near the creek. Hole six runs along Rusk Middle School’s fence line. Hole nine throws past sentinel trees to a sunken green by the creek.
Weichsel Park is a testament to community recreation. It provides a space for disc golf. It offers challenges and natural beauty. Despite its urban setting, the park is an oasis. It is a place where you can connect with nature. So, come to Weichsel Park. Experience the thrill of the game. Embrace the park’s unique charm.
