Look at this, it’s called Weiblicher Akt. It’s a statue by Christa Baumgärtel. It must have been created in the 1980s. It was part of the Sculpture Symposium in 1984. If you want to know more, just look for the sculpture in the public art database of Bremen, there you’ll find a lot more information about it. But now look at the detail of this statue’s face. Look at the texture! It’s made of bronze, but Christa Baumgärtel had to use a special technique for that look that has a very interesting texture. Now think about her motivation. Why did she create this? What did she want you to see? In 1984, in an era of cultural change in Germany, it was a brave move to focus on the human body in this way. Was she trying to provoke the public? Or was she just trying to capture a moment in time?
