Could a place named Weddewarden hold more than meets the eye? Here in Weddewarden, nestled in Bremerhaven’s northern embrace, layers of history intertwine with the modern world. Weddewarden, the oldest documented settlement in Bremerhaven, whispers tales from centuries past. In 1091, “Widewrde,” a name signifying a village mound or “Wierde”, appeared in a document from the Archdiocese of Bremen. Ten Frisians entrusted their inheritance to Archbishop Liemar, receiving it back as a fief. Imagine these early inhabitants shaping the land, creating raised settlements amidst the frequently flooded marshlands. Weddewarden’s strategic location on the Außenweser made it witness to both peaceful trade and fierce conflict. In 1291, right here, Wurt Frisians negotiated a peace treaty with the city of Bremen, addressing the persistent problem of piracy against shipwrecked Bremen merchant vessels. Weddewarden’s history takes a dramatic turn in the 16th century. Archbishop Christoph, seeking to secure his holdings, constructed the Morgenstern Castle in 1517/18, appointing Claus Fiegen as its administrator. However, just a year later, Duke Magnus of Lauenburg, allied with the Wurt Frisians, destroyed the castle. Today, a restaurant named “Schloss Morgenstern” stands on the site, a gentle reminder of this turbulent past. Weddewarden played a significant role in Bremerhaven’s development. In 1882, inside the “Schloss Morgenstern” inn, the poet Hermann Allmers and his friends founded the “Männer vom Morgenstern,” a local heritage association. Their collection of archaeological and ethnographic objects eventually formed the basis of the Morgenstern Museum, now the Historical Museum Bremerhaven. The 20th century brought rapid modernization and industrialization. The expansion of Bremerhaven’s container terminal in the early 2000s brought economic growth but also encroached on Weddewarden. The construction of Container-Terminal CT IV, adding 340 meters to the existing quay, extended the quay to an impressive 4930 meters. Though met with protests, the city guaranteed Weddewarden’s continued existence, ensuring that the whispers of its long history will continue to be heard amidst the bustling activity of a modern port city. Weddewarden, a name echoing through time, reminds us that even in the shadow of progress, the stories of the past endure, enriching the present and shaping the future.
