“A legacy etched in aluminum” whispers the weathered plaque. Before you stands the Webberville Ebenezer Baptist Church Plaque a testament to resilience faith and a complex history. It’s more than just a marker it’s a window into the past. John F Webber an Anglo-American man settled here in 1839 with his African-American wife and children. They sought refuge from the racism prevalent in other Texas towns. Their presence sparked the growth of Webber Prairie a community of plantation owners and enslaved people. This area later became Webberville.

Racial prejudice sadly forced Webber to leave in 1851. He sold his land and relocated his family to Mexico. Yet the land remained a poignant symbol. In 1868 Matthew Duty a significant figure in this community gifted one acre for a church. This act of generosity gave birth to the Webberville Ebenezer Baptist Church. The church served as a sanctuary and a beacon of hope for newly freed African Americans. Thomas Reads Suns Johnson Lowens Berry and Mary Green were among the founding members. Reverend Wesley Barrow led the congregation as its first pastor.

The church wasn’t just a place of worship it was a vital community center. It also served as a school. Black and white students attended classes there even sharing the same space. This demonstrates the church’s role in navigating the complexities of the era. This poignant blend of religious and educational purposes makes the plaque’s story even more compelling.

Despite the challenges of time and societal shifts the Webberville Ebenezer Baptist Church endured. Its history reflects both the pain and the triumph of the human spirit. Even after many families moved to Austin the church remained active. Former members still gather here for special occasions. It represents their enduring faith and the resilience of the community.

In 1956 some members branched off creating the New Light Ebenezer Baptist Church in Austin. The original church however perseveres. Its story etched in this simple aluminum plaque continues to resonate. It continues to provide a reminder of the enduring strength of faith. It is a place where stories are shared. It is a place where history is held sacred. It is a place where the past continues to whisper its secrets to those who listen.
