“Calumet Area Education”. Those three words held so much promise. Right here, where you stand now, once stood WCAE-TV. WCAE-TV wasn’t just another station. It was a beacon of knowledge, a pioneer in Northwest Indiana and the Calumet Region. This was the first television station to grace these parts, its signal first humming to life on September 26, 1967. Imagine a time before cable, before the internet. WCAE-TV, owned by the Lake Central School Corporation, was a lifeline to the world. It broadcast educational programs for adults and children. It covered local news and sports, bringing Friday night lights into living rooms. It even showcased the thrill of Indiana state high school basketball. But more than just entertainment, WCAE-TV was a community hub. It was a place where students learned the art of television production. It was a platform for local events and the annual televised auction, a testament to the community’s spirit. Sadly, the story of WCAE-TV wasn’t all sunshine and roses. Financial troubles plagued the station. Despite its best efforts, including a move to a powerful color transmitter in 1974, the station struggled to stay afloat. By 1983, the school board made the difficult decision to cease operations. The airwaves went silent on March 31, marking the end of an era. The legacy of WCAE-TV, however, lived on. Its license, like a phoenix from the ashes, was reborn in 1987 as WYIN on channel 56. Though its time was cut short, WCAE-TV left an indelible mark on this community. It served as a reminder that even in the face of adversity, the pursuit of knowledge and connection perseveres.
