Under the Alaskan Way Viaduct a hidden gem pulsed with life. This was Wave Rave Cave. For sixteen years it throbbed with light and energy.

Wave Rave Cave wasn’t just any sculpture. It was a community project. It began in 2002. Artist Dan Corson’s vision transformed a dark underpass. Pea gravel covered foam waves seemed to undulate and erupt. At night psychedelic lights brought the space to life. It echoed the neighborhood’s history of raves and artistic energy.

Think about it. Giant cool whip waves under a viaduct. That’s Wave Rave Cave. It was a collaboration. Seattle City Light crews helped. So did Emily Stachurski and Pacific Studios. Even the Belltown community Casa Latina and Seattle Pacific University contributed. Funding came from Seattle City Light’s percent for art program.

Sadly the Alaskan Way Viaduct’s demolition threatened Wave Rave Cave’s existence. Removal was necessary. The waves were carefully taken to storage near the Fremont Cut. It was a bittersweet goodbye. A temporary farewell to this unique artwork. But the memory of Wave Rave Cave’s vibrant energy lives on. Its spirit continues to inspire. It’s a reminder that art can transform even the most unexpected of spaces. The search for a new home continues. Until then its story waits to be rekindled.
