It all began on March 1 2001. Under the leadership of Joe D’Mango. A former DJ from Magic 89.9. The station initially played urban adult contemporary music. But in 2008 its sound shifted. Wave 89.1 embraced a bolder more urban contemporary format. Pumping out even more R&B and hip-hop.
Think of the legendary Francis Magalona. The late rap icon once hosted ‘The Word-up Show’ there. When the station was still known as 89 DMZ. That’s just one slice of Wave 89.1’s history. The station created unforgettable compilations. Like Dreamscape and Quiet Storm. And programs like Sunday Slowdown Wave Back Wednesday and Feel Good Friday. These shows became beloved rituals for many listeners. Each one a unique blend of music and connection.
Sadly Wave 89.1’s broadcast ended in April 2024. The station’s final Facebook post was simple and heartfelt. A message of thanks for the years of support.
