Did you know that Cayetano Arellano High School is one of Manila’s oldest public schools? Right here before you stands a testament to Philippine education. This isn’t just a building. It’s a living history book.
Cayetano Arellano High School. A name whispered through generations of students. It began life in 1921 as Manila North High School. This was after Manila High School split. One school became Manila South High School later Araullo High School. The other became our very own Cayetano Arellano. Early principals were Americans. Mr Eugene Willis Porter was the first. Later the school was renamed to honor Justice Cayetano Arellano. He was the first Filipino Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
The school thrived. It grew quickly. It needed more space. So it expanded. Annex buildings popped up. They housed more students. These annexes later became other schools. Like Jose Abad Santos High School. And Manuel L Quezon High School. Arellano High School became the largest public school in Manila. Think of the sheer number of students. Think of the teachers. Think of the stories. This place vibrates with the echoes of laughter and learning.
During World War II the school even served as a garrison. It was later recognized in 1945. Mr Juan C Laya was the first Filipino principal. Imagine the challenges. The rebuilding. The revitalization of education in a post-war Manila. Even a strong earthquake couldn’t stop Arellano High School. In 1968 it even served as a temporary medical and relief center. The students helped the victims. The school received the Presidential Service Award for its efforts. Quite an achievement.
Today Cayetano Arellano High School continues its legacy. It’s a place of learning and growth. It’s a place where students achieve amazing things. It’s a place with a rich and vibrant history. A place you should be proud to know. A place I’m proud to share with you today. A place that shapes the future of the Philippines one student at a time. A legacy forged in the heart of Manila.
