Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Temple is also known as the Waterfall Hilltop Temple. Locals call it “Thaneer Malai.” It is one of the most significant Hindu temples here in George Town.

The Waterfall Hill Temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan. It is the largest Lord Murugan temple outside India. Its seven-story gopuram is 21.6 meters tall. This main tower is an impressive sight.

The temple is a major focal point. It is especially important during the Hindu festival of Thaipusam in Malaysia.

Let’s journey back to the temple’s beginnings. In 1800, a shrine was located at the base of the great Waterfall. It became the focal point of the Thaipusam Festival.

Later in 1850, the British administration took over the area. They needed to install a reservoir. The temple was relocated to its current hilltop location.

The temple has been renovated. This happens every 12 years. Hindu beliefs require this cycle. The temple we see today was largely constructed around 1850.

In 2012, a grand consecration ceremony was held. The Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani temple was newly completed then. It cost 10 million ringgit.

Notice the architecture. The temple pillars feature designs. These are from the 14th and 15th centuries. They represent Chola and Pandya temple styles. Artisans from India created them.

Look around the Waterfall Hill Temple complex. You will see several other temples. There is the Arulmigu Sree Ganeshar Temple. It sits at the foot of the stairs. Also see the Arulmigu Naga Naathar Temple.

On the eve of Thaipusam in 2017, a golden chariot appeared. It cost RM3 million. The chariot featured golden horses. Statues adorned its tower. Devotees pulled the chariot. It journeyed from Queen Street to Jalan Kebun Bunga.

Consider the Chitraparuvam Festival. The Hindu Mahajana Sangam organizes it each year. A chariot procession carries the deity of Lord Subramaniyaswami. It starts from Queen Street Sri Mahamariamman Temple.

The temple is open for Darshan from 6:45 am to 9:00 pm. Priests perform daily rituals. They also conduct special ceremonies during festivals.

The Waterfall Hill Temple stands as a testament. It shows the enduring faith and artistic heritage of the Hindu community. Remember the climb. Remember the history. Remember the vibrant festivals. The Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Temple offers a unique spiritual and cultural experience.
