Have you ever stumbled upon a hidden gem in the middle of a bustling city? Wat Preah Enkoasey in Siem Reap is just that. It’s a place where ancient whispers mingle with modern-day prayers. Wat Preah Enkoasey seamlessly blends the old and the new. A functioning pagoda stands proudly alongside the remnants of a 10th-century Angkorian temple. The ancient temple site, also known as Preah Enkosey or Preah Indra Kaosrey, is tucked away behind the vibrant, active pagoda. Two brick sanctuaries reach towards the sky. They are accompanied by the shadowy outlines of two library buildings and a crumbling gopura, or entrance gate. Two weathered lion statues stand guard. These lions hint at the grandeur that once was. A laterite wall once enclosed the site. You can still trace its foundation. Interestingly, the pagoda itself rests on a laterite base. Some believe these blocks were recycled from the original wall, connecting the new with the old in a tangible way. Wat Preah Enkoasey was originally designed as a trio of temples. A central tower would have been flanked by two smaller shrines. The southern shrine, however, seems to be missing. It was never completed, or perhaps it was demolished long ago. French explorers in the early 1900s made no mention of it. Now, only the central and northern temples remain, standing as testaments to time. The central tower at Wat Preah Enkoasey boasts a remarkable lintel. This lintel, above the doorway, features a rare depiction of the Churning of the Sea of Milk. Vishnu, Shiva, and Brahma are all represented in this intricate carving. Above this scene, you can still make out faded carvings in the pediment. A male figure, nestled within a floral niche, is flanked by a pair of legs. The lintel itself portrays the majestic elephant Airvata, likely carrying Indra. Unfortunately, Indra’s image has been lost to time, chiseled away long ago. The northern tower also holds a story, although its lintel is too decayed to decipher. Above the false door on its southern side, remnants of decoration cling to the brickwork. Inside, a contemporary statue stands, its identity shrouded in mystery. Some say it depicts Khleang Moeung, a warrior spirit from 16th-century folklore. Others believe it represents Trasak Paem, a king of the 14th century. Scattered throughout Wat Preah Enkoasey are sema stones of various styles. These stones likely marked the boundaries of a wooden vihara that predates the current pagoda. Perhaps they encircled a ritual area. Their exact original placement remains unknown, adding another layer of intrigue to this captivating site. Inside the pagoda itself, you’ll find even more sema stones, these of a later style. Wat Preah Enkoasey is more than just stones and carvings. It is a living testament to the enduring power of faith and history. A place where the past whispers to the present, inviting you to listen.
