Hidden down a quiet lane near the Siem Reap river lies Wat Polanka. This unassuming Buddhist monastery holds a remarkable history. It’s more than just a place of worship. It’s a silent witness to Cambodia’s tumultuous past.

In 1992 two French monks Jean Pierre and Charles arrived in Siem Reap. Cambodia was just beginning to heal from decades of conflict. The Khmer Rouge regime had left its scars. The country was slowly reopening to the world. These monks found a humble wooden house to rent. It was nestled in a village close to Wat Polanka. Their ambitious project focused on vocational training. They aimed to help young Cambodians rebuild their lives.

Every morning at 4 am they meditated at Wat Polanka. They sought strength for their difficult work. By 8 am they were at the Chantiers-Écoles a vocational school they founded. They also started a silk farm. One day in 1993 the Khmer Rouge briefly took over Siem Reap. They passed through the village. They did not enter the monks’ house. Wat Polanka remained untouched. A testament to the resilience of the spirit.

Charles returned to France. Jean Pierre stayed. He took over the programs. He later married Nathalie. Together they created a long term plan for the Chantiers-Écoles. This evolved into Artisans d’Angkor a renowned organization. Wat Polanka remained a significant presence in their lives. A place of solace and reflection. A constant reminder of their mission.

The house near Wat Polanka became the family home. It held countless memories. Christmases were spent there. Friends and family gathered. There were birthday parties. Even a fashion designer Eric Raisina stayed for training at the silk farm. He later put on Siem Reap’s first ever fashion show. Wat Polanka stood sentinel over this ever changing community. Its presence a calming influence.

Later the house was transformed into Maison Polanka a boutique hotel. Even as the hotel opened Wat Polanka remained a cherished neighbour. A symbol of continuity in a rapidly changing world. It still stands. A testament to faith and perseverance in the heart of Siem Reap. It is a must-see for those who wish to see a quiet yet powerful symbol of Siem Reap’s history. A history etched not in stone but in the quiet resilience of a Buddhist monastery.
