In 1891, a beacon of progress rose above Bremerhaven-Geestemünde. The Wasserturm am Geestemünder Neumarkt, a testament to engineering ingenuity. This grand water tower, designed by Walter Pfeffer, stands proudly at the intersection of An der Mühle 33, Bülkenstraße, and Konrad-Adenauer-Platz. Originally, Geestemünde received its water from Bexhövede, nine kilometers away. The growing population and burgeoning industries of the late 19th century demanded a more robust solution. The Wasserturm am Geestemünder Neumarkt answered that call. Built at the highest point of the then-New Market, its round brick structure, with a protruding tower head and conical roof, became a local landmark. The design, inspired by Professor Otto Intze of Aachen, featured a distinctive cornice and four gable dormers, adding to its aesthetic appeal. This Wasserturm am Geestemünder Neumarkt could hold and distribute 500 cubic meters of water daily. It served 20,000 residents and businesses, ensuring a reliable water supply for a rapidly developing community. The Wasserturm am Geestemünder Neumarkt, like the city it served, endured hardship during World War II. Suffering heavy damage, its original dome was replaced with a flat roof. Years later, in 1976, it faced demolition. However, recognizing its historical and symbolic importance, the community rallied to save the Wasserturm am Geestemünder Neumarkt. By 1978, it was restored to its former glory. No longer needed for its original purpose after 1996, the Wasserturm am Geestemünder Neumarkt embarked on a new chapter. In 2003, a glass annex was added, transforming it into a café. Today, the Wasserturm am Geestemünder Neumarkt stands as a beloved landmark. A symbol of Geestemünde’s resilience. Enjoy a coffee at its base and reflect on the vital role this magnificent structure played in shaping the community.
