High above Klotzsche, the Wasserturm stands sentinel. It has witnessed a dramatic transformation of this Dresden district. The Wasserturm wasn’t always a residential haven. It began its life in 1935, born from necessity. The old water tower had to be demolished to make way for the Dresden Airport. The new Wasserturm, designed by Kurt Otto, became an instant landmark. Its 35-meter height dominated the skyline. Its 10,000 hectoliter capacity quenched the thirst of the burgeoning airport.

The Wasserturm in Klotzsche even graced the town’s coat of arms for a time. This shows how important it was for the town. Its original waterworks, built in 1899 on Königsbrücker Landstraße, drew water from deep wells and the Flossergraben. This older system became insufficient for the growing community and the airport. This led to the construction of the modern Wasserturm we see today. After World War II, the original waterworks were decommissioned. The Wasserturm, however, continued to serve the community into the 1960s. It even pulled double duty as a fire watchtower.

The Wasserturm in Klotzsche boasts a unique architectural detail. A large relief panel, created by Rudolf Wittig, adorned its facade. It depicted a serious-faced woman drawing water from a spring. This artwork reflected the symbolism prevalent during the National Socialist era. The woman and water represented a flowing life source. The relief, originally integrated into the tower’s wall, has been relocated. It now stands on a pedestal at the entrance to the property. This relocation mirrors the evolving relationship between art and architecture.

The Wasserturm in Klotzsche stood empty for a period after its decommissioning. In 1970, it found new purpose as a community education center. This lasted until 1987. Then, it was sold in 2001 to a private owner. The owner embarked on an ambitious project to transform the Wasserturm into apartments. The conversion involved removing the technical equipment and redesigning the interior. Today, the Wasserturm houses twelve private residences. This transformation preserved a piece of Klotzsche’s history. It also offered a unique living experience within a landmark structure. The Wasserturm in Klotzsche remains a proud testament to adaptation and resilience. It continues to watch over Klotzsche, a silent observer of the ever-changing landscape.
