Chicago’s resilience is etched into its very foundations. The Washington Block stands as a testament to this spirit. It whispers tales of a city reborn from ashes. The Washington Block, completed in 1874, emerged from the devastation of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Designed by architects Frederick and Edward Baumann, it was one of Chicago’s tallest buildings at the time. Its limestone facade, once adorned with an exterior staircase leading to a second-floor entrance, now houses a 7-Eleven and the Carter Legal Group PC. But its true marvel lies hidden beneath the surface. The Washington Block boasts a rare “isolated pier foundation.” This innovative technique uses separate foundations under each load-bearing point. This allowed the building to stand firm on Chicago’s soft, compressible soil. This pioneering foundation paved the way for the city’s iconic skyscrapers, making Chicago the birthplace of these architectural giants. Originally intended for upscale offices near the burgeoning LaSalle Street financial district, the arrival of the Chicago ‘L’ next to the building deterred those upscale clients. In the mid-1900s, ground-level architectural details were removed in an attempt to modernize the storefronts. Thankfully, some of these details have been restored in the 21st century. The Washington Block is more than just a building. It’s a symbol of Chicago’s enduring strength and its innovative spirit.
