“Did the women really wash clothes here?” a child’s voice piped up. We stand before the Wäschebrunnen, a monument to a bygone era in Karlsruhe. The Wäschebrunnen, or Washer Women’s Fountain, isn’t a place where women actually washed clothes. It’s a tribute to the hardworking women of Bulach. These women supplemented their families’ farm incomes by washing laundry for city dwellers. The inscription on the stone basin of the Wäschebrunnen tells their story. It reads, “Bulach’s fame as a village of washerwomen arose from the diligence of its women, the soft Alb water, and its proximity to the city.” The Wäschebrunnen itself was created in 1996 by Gerhard Karl Huber, a local stonemason and sculptor. Huber, who lived from 1941 to 2023, crafted this monument from natural stone and bronze. The Wäschebrunnen stands as a testament to the women’s industrious spirit. It also acknowledges the role of the Alb River’s soft water and Bulach’s convenient location near the city. This combination of factors made Bulach a laundry hub. The fountain is a reminder of a time when hard work and resourcefulness shaped the community.
