Warragul CFA isn’t just a building. It’s a vital part of the Warragul community. Its history stretches back to 1883 when it first opened its doors on Queens Street. Over the years the station moved. First to Smith Street then finally to its current location on Gladstone Street in 2000.
The Warragul CFA has a rich history. It’s a story etched in old newspapers and faded photographs. Vaughan Fox a retired local painstakingly compiled this history into a book. He spent countless hours researching the brigade’s past. He wanted to ensure future generations knew the sacrifices made by past members. The book includes stories of heroic acts of bravery. It details the brigade’s evolution from humble beginnings to its current state.
The Warragul CFA wasn’t always as well equipped as it is today. Early firefighters relied on basic equipment and their sheer determination. The old bell from 1893 still hangs in the station. It’s a powerful symbol of the brigade’s enduring legacy. A letter written by founding Captain James Biram to the council in 1883 is now framed and hangs proudly. It speaks volumes about their commitment.
Today the Warragul CFA boasts 65 members. Forty-three are operational firefighters. They respond to approximately 280 calls annually. They have four trucks including a Hazmat vehicle. They are incredibly well-equipped to face any challenge. The dedication of these volunteers is remarkable. They are the unsung heroes who protect our community.
