A sprawling complex greets you. It’s Warner Bros Studios Leavesden. This isn’t just any film studio. It’s a legacy etched in history.

Before the magic of Harry Potter captivated the world Leavesden had a different life. It began as Leavesden Aerodrome in 1940. During World War II this site was a massive aircraft factory. It produced thousands of planes. The Mosquito fighter bomber and the Handley Page Halifax bomber were made here. It was the largest factory in the world by volume. The airfield’s runway and control tower still stand today. They are a testament to that era. The tower is now an observation lounge.

After the war the aerodrome changed hands. De Havilland then Hawker Siddeley and finally Rolls-Royce owned it. They manufactured helicopter engines there. By the early 1990s Rolls-Royce moved operations to Bristol. Leavesden stood empty.

Then came the unexpected. In 1994 the James Bond film GoldenEye needed a location. Pinewood Studios was booked. Leavesden’s huge hangars offered a solution. The conversion from aircraft factory to film studio began. The production nicknamed the site Cubbywood after the long-serving producer Albert R Cubby Broccoli.

Leavesden Studios quickly gained popularity. Films like Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace and Sleepy Hollow followed. In 2000 Warner Bros began filming Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone there. All eight Harry Potter films were made at Leavesden. Some films even reused sets from Harry Potter. Warner Bros then bought Leavesden in 2010. They invested heavily in renovations.

The studios reopened in 2012 as Warner Bros Studios Leavesden. A public attraction opened as well. It’s the Warner Bros Studio Tour London The Making of Harry Potter. It attracts thousands of visitors daily. The site retains its secure studio spaces. It remains one of the largest and most advanced filmmaking facilities worldwide. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge officially opened the refurbished studios in 2013. Despite some fires over the years Warner Bros Studios Leavesden continues to thrive. It’s a place where filmmaking history is made. A place where movies and magic intertwine. A place where you are standing right now.
