Have you ever imagined a place where vaudeville’s ghosts mingle with rock and roll legends? Here at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco, such a place exists. The Warfield Theatre stands proudly on Market Street, a grand dame of entertainment since 1922. Showman Marcus Loew built this magnificent theatre, naming it after his friend, San Francisco native David Warfield. Originally Loew’s Warfield, it was the 300th theatre in Loew’s chain, a testament to his love for spectacle. The Warfield Theatre wasn’t just another venue. It was a vaudeville and movie palace, designed to transport audiences to other worlds. Inside, marble, gilt, and chandeliers adorn the lobby. A grand staircase sweeps up to the balcony, promising a night of enchantment. The theatre itself boasts a captivating mural by Albert Herter, depicting matadors and senoritas. Even a dismembered animal head adds a touch of the macabre to this artistic masterpiece. The Warfield Theatre was designed for elaborate productions, evident in its 20 dressing rooms backstage, each a silent witness to countless performers preparing to wow the crowds. Legends like Al Jolson, Louis Armstrong, and Charlie Chaplin graced the Warfield’s stage. Even Rin Tin Tin, the canine superstar, had his moment in the spotlight. In 1979, Bob Dylan breathed new life into the Warfield Theatre with a two-week run of shows. This marked a turning point, transforming the venue into a rock and roll haven. From the intimate sounds of Jerry Garcia, who practically made the Warfield Theatre his second home, to the raw energy of Slayer’s “War at the Warfield”, the venue has embraced a diverse tapestry of musical genres. The Warfield Theatre has hosted everyone from The Clash and U2 to Prince and David Bowie. Even the Shaolin Monks of China have graced this historic stage. Beyond music, the Warfield Theatre has been a backdrop for theatrical productions, including “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and the Cantonese Opera. Scenes from the movie “The Doors” were even filmed here. The Warfield Theatre continued to evolve. In 2005, David Addington purchased the building, and in 2008, AEG Live took over operations, continuing the tradition of hosting world-class performances. Each performance, each echo of laughter and applause, adds another layer to the Warfield Theatre’s rich history, ensuring that its soul continues to ripen with time.
