Four hundred meters of brick history. That’s Warehouse XI in Bremen. Standing before this colossal structure you’re witnessing a monument to Bremen’s port past.

Warehouse XI isn’t just any warehouse. It’s a giant. The second longest building in Bremen. It was constructed between 1908 and 1912. Originally designed as two separate cotton warehouses Speicher XI and Speicher XIII. They were later connected after World War II. The architects Eduard Suling and Hermann Bücking had a vision. That vision was realised in brick and mortar. The result? A striking facade. Stairwells reach beyond the eaves. Cargo hatches stand in rhythmic rows. It’s a masterful display of industrial architecture.

But Warehouse XI’s story extends beyond its impressive architecture. In 1994 it gained official protection. It was recognized as a monument of industrial architecture. Then between 2001 and 2003 it underwent a remarkable transformation. Professor Klaus Hübotter spearheaded this renovation. He also played a key role in establishing the Harbour Museum Bremen and the University of the Arts Bremen within its walls.

Today Warehouse XI is a vibrant hub. The Harbour Museum shares space with the University’s Faculty of Fine Arts and Design. Workshops buzz with activity. Students experiment in bronze casting model building printing and recording studios. The building thrives. It’s a testament to adaptive reuse. It breathes new life into a historic structure.

The architects Schomers and Schürmann masterminded the renovation. They received an award in 2010 for their outstanding work on historic preservation. Klaus Hübotter was appointed an honorary senator of the University of the Arts Bremen in 2011. A fitting tribute to his contribution. He preserved history. He infused it with artistic energy.

Warehouse XI is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a story of Bremen’s maritime past. It’s a symbol of urban renewal. It’s a testament to the power of creative vision. And it’s a place where history and art collide. A place you won’t soon forget.
