A shiver ran down my spine. The wind whispered secrets from the Thames. This is Wapping.

Wapping a historic area in Tower Hamlets has a fascinating past. Its name possibly derives from ‘wapol’ meaning marsh. For centuries it was a bustling maritime hub. Sailors mastmakers and boatbuilders thrived here. It even had Execution Dock where pirates met their end.

Imagine the scene. Criminals were paraded from the Marshalsea Prison across London Bridge. Their final destination Execution Dock in Wapping. Their bodies remained until submerged by the tide three times. A grim spectacle.

The area’s strong maritime character is still present. Several venerable pubs line the Thames foreshore. The Prospect of Whitby claims to be the oldest. It boasts a replica of the Execution Dock gibbet. Nearby is The Captain Kidd a pub named after the infamous pirate.

Wapping’s history is also marked by tragedy. The London Docks construction led to much demolition. World War II bombings further devastated the area. Post-war dock closures added to the decline. The area became run down. Many warehouses stood empty.

Then came regeneration. In the 1980s warehouses were converted into luxury flats. Wapping’s fortunes changed. This was also the site of the Wapping dispute. Rupert Murdoch’s News International moved its printing works here in 1986. A major trade union dispute followed. This became known as the Battle of Wapping.

Wapping’s story is far from over. It’s a place where past and present collide. The ghosts of pirates and dockworkers mingle with modern residents. The echoes of the Battle of Wapping still linger. But Wapping remains a vibrant and fascinating place. Mudlarking along the Thames foreshore searching for fragments of history is a popular pastime. It’s a place of contrasts a mixture of old and new. A place full of stories waiting to be discovered. Wapping awaits your exploration.
