Originally comprised of three separate schools – a girls’ school, a boys’ school, and an infant school – Wanstead Church School has evolved into the unified institution you see today. The Nursery, known as the Master’s House, is the sole surviving original building, a charming reminder of the school’s rich past. It was, however, originally the Mistress’s House. A stone on the front wall, visible from the High Street, bears the inscription “Parochial Schools 1790”. This stone, believed to be the original foundation stone, is a source of historical intrigue. While thought to be from 1790, records suggest the actual founding year was 1786. The discrepancy likely arose from wear and tear on the stone, altering the inscribed ‘6’ to resemble a ‘0’. Wanstead Church School prides itself on its values of wisdom, compassion, and strength.
