“Saved through Grace” is more than just a motto here at Wanstead Baptist Church. It is a testament to its very foundation. Let’s journey back to the late 19th century, a time when this corner of Essex was a village. I’ll tell you the story of Wanstead Baptist Church.

In 1888, a young man named William Coverley began preaching in open-air meetings. He preached in nearby Cowley Road. His message resonated. His sister was one of his first converts. Others soon followed.

The growing group needed a place to meet. They found a leaky old carpenter’s shop in Nightingale Lane. Its roof leaked so badly it earned the nickname “Colander Cathedral”. Later, Edward Scoones from the Metropolitan Tabernacle joined them. He strengthened their resolve.

Six years later, they purchased a site on Wellington Road. This is where Wanstead Baptist Church stands today. On February 27, 1894, Wanstead Baptist Church opened its doors. It was a small building made of corrugated iron. It cost £300. That was a significant sum. The average wage was only £1 or less per week.

Sixteen local baptized believers gathered. They signed a Declaration of Faith. It declared their commitment to Christian worship. It also showed their instruction in this place. They united in Church Fellowship. They recognized themselves as sinners saved through Grace. They immersed into the likeness of Christ’s death and resurrection.

Paying off the land took time. It wasn’t until June 1917 that the debt was cleared. Over the years, many have served Wanstead Baptist Church. Lay pastors, student pastors, moderators, and elders have ministered here. Dedicated women also played a vital role. They served as deacons, church secretaries and Sunday School teachers.

One woman is remembered with special affection. Miss Mulhern. She was a headmistress. Everyone affectionately called her “The Gov”. It was a title from the days when headmistresses were called “Governess”. She was late and very generous.

Today, Wanstead Baptist Church still stands. The corrugated iron building remains. Of course, there have been additions and renovations. It now boasts central heating. A larger number of people meet to worship. They witness at the same location.

Wanstead Baptist Church sees itself as a local-global family of faith. They love the Saviour of the World. Wanstead Baptist Church continues to welcome all. It is a testament to faith. It is a beacon of community.
