Can a single acre of land hold 150 years of faith? Here at the Wandin/Seville Uniting Church, it certainly does. The story of this church isn’t etched in stone, though its walls certainly are. It’s woven into the fabric of this community, starting in a simple home. In 1868, a Mr. Payne opened his doors to the newly arrived settlers of Wandin. This act of hospitality marked the beginning of 150 years of worship for the Wandin/Seville Uniting Church. That same year, an acre of land was granted for “religious purposes, public meetings, and education.” The first church building was erected here. Years later, in 1881, work began on the stone church you see today. Local families, names like Hunter, Sebire, Hogg, Holter, and Payne, poured their labor and resources into its construction. The very stones whisper of their dedication. The Wandin/Seville Uniting Church witnessed the joining of lives, too. Lydia Gaudion and John Hunter’s wedding marked the first celebration of marriage within these walls. The Gaudion family’s connection to music at Wandin/Seville Uniting Church is extraordinary. For generations, they filled the church with melody. Organist Fred Gaudion’s 68 years of service stand as a testament to their enduring contribution. Life continued around the church, too. In 1908, a Mr. Couch even grazed his cow on the land between the church and the hall. His payment? Keeping the area clear of scrub and ferns. The Wandin/Seville Uniting Church grew along with the community. A kindergarten and vestry were added in 1936. A new hall and kitchen followed in 1960. The early 2000s saw the merging of the Wandin and Seville congregations. Stained glass windows from Seville found a new home within the Wandin/Seville Uniting Church, uniting not just the congregations, but their history as well. Within the church rests a treasure: a British and Foreign Bible Society Holy Bible from 1885. Brought by an early minister, John Leigh Green, this bible has witnessed countless sermons and silent prayers. The Wandin/Seville Uniting Church stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and community. From a gathering in a home to a beautiful stone church, it has witnessed 150 years of shared history.
