Nestled in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges, Wandin North is a charming town that has been shaped by its horticultural past and a love for the outdoors. Imagine yourself stepping back in time, walking along the winding streets lined with stately old homes, some of which were built by the very families who first settled in the area. The air is filled with the scents of blooming fruit trees and the gentle hum of bees buzzing among the blossoming orchards.

The history of Wandin North began in the late 1800s when the Wandin Yallock Parish was surveyed. The original plan for a township was about one kilometer south of the current town, but the arrival of the railway in 1901 changed the course of its development. Named Wandin, the bustling railway town soon gave rise to the neighboring Wandin North.

You can still catch glimpses of the town’s agricultural heritage in the rolling hills where orchards and market gardens continue to thrive. Wandin North has always been known for its fruit, with early families planting raspberries and later expanding to apples, peaches, cherries, and strawberries. The town even boasted a jam factory in the 1870s, proof of its rich horticultural history. Today, much of the land remains dedicated to agriculture, ensuring a delectable supply of fresh produce for the locals.

Beyond the fruitful landscape, the Yarra Valley Rail Trail winds its way through the town, offering hikers and cyclists a taste of the region’s natural beauty. Stop near the old Wandin train station – the platform still remains – and look for the colorful murals depicting the rich history of the area. The station, although closed since 1965, serves as a poignant reminder of the town’s connection to the past.

Step into Mont De Lancey, the original home of the Sebire family, now a much-loved museum, and let yourself be transported back to an era of simpler times. The museum complex, with its old chapel, replica schoolroom, and blacksmith shop, offers a fascinating glimpse into the pioneer life of Wandin North. The museum also houses a collection of local artifacts and memorabilia, offering a unique perspective on the town’s journey.

Wandin North may be a small town, but its big heart and dedication to preserving its history and natural beauty make it an incredibly special place to visit.
