Imagine a time long ago. Around 770, Walluf emerged. The town’s name was Waltaffa. We are standing in Walluf. This place is more than just a stop on a map. Walluf is a story etched in time.

Walluf lies on the southern slope of the Taunus Mountains. It sits on the north bank of the Rhine River. The town calls itself the Gateway to the Rheingau. It is the easternmost community in the Rheingau.

The name Waltaffa meant forest water. It referred to the Wallufsbach creek. This creek once marked a boundary. It separated the Rheingau and the Ku00f6nigssondergau. Walluf was strategically placed. It lay along an old thoroughfare. This road connected Mainz to the Limburg Basin.

Let’s talk wine. Winemaking has thrived here since 779. That makes Walluf the Rheingau’s oldest winegrowing community. The Rheingau people were thankful. The archbishopric of Mainz gave them their civil rights.

Now, envision a defense. Near Walluf was the Rheingauer Gebu00fcck. This was a natural barrier. It was a hedge of stunted trees. It protected against northern attacks. The Archbishopric of Mainz created it. This is why Walluf is known as the Gateway to the Rheingau. The village entrance had a bulwark called the Backofen. It means the Oven.

Walluf’s past is complex. In the early Middle Ages, the area was divided. The western part belonged to the Rheingau. It was under the Archbishopric of Mainz. The larger district lay east of the Wallufbach. It belonged to Ku00f6nigssondergau. Residents eventually sought safety behind the Gebu00fcck.

Oberwalluf arose as another settlement. It sat above the riverside community. The original community became Niederwalluf. Oberwalluf appeared in 11th-century documents. The town hall built in 1412 still stands. It displays Oberwalluf’s coat of arms. A wheel of Mainz is on the left. A key is on the right.

Let’s consider the Johanniskirche. A church existed here around 1000. Ruins remain. Tradition says a baptistery stood here as early as 744. It was the site of a monk’s baptism. The monk was named Fidelis.

Today, Walluf thrives. It has a strong economy. Several companies have headquarters here. They are in chemical industry, construction and wine estates. Tourism also plays a role. Walluf boasts a marina and sports facilities.

Walluf is known for its vineyards. These include Berg-Bildstock and Gottesacker. Vitusberg is named for St. Vitus. Walkenberg recalls a fulling mill. Riesling grapes dominate. Walluf wines are excellent. They are overshadowed by Eltville’s fame.

Between Niederwalluf and Oberwalluf, mills once lined the Wallufbach. Remnants remain. The town hall now stands in this area. An ancient path connects the two districts. It runs through the Distrikt Paradies.

Storks also call Walluf home. Fifty white stork pairs breed here. The Schiersteiner Storchengemeinschaft reinstated them.

Consider the Wallufer Turmburg. Its remains are on Niederwalluf’s outskirts. This tower dates back to the 10th century. It protected against Norman attacks. Frank von Wiesbaden acquired it in 1263.

Walluf offers a glimpse into Germany’s past. The town’s strategic location shaped its identity. From forest water to gateway, Walluf stands as a testament to history. The Walluf story includes wine, defense and faith. All have shaped this unique community.
