Twenty-four hectares of tranquil peace. That’s the Waldfriedhof in Luneburg. Imagine its vastness. This sprawling cemetery wasn’t always here.

The Waldfriedhof is Luneburg’s largest cemetery. It opened in 1961. The city needed more burial space. The Michaelis and Zentralfriedhof cemeteries were full. They were nearly at capacity by the late 1950s.

The Waldfriedhof was designed to be spacious. It was planned to meet the needs of a growing city. The designers envisioned a landscape blending with the natural surroundings. They even used demolition material from the old town. This material was freely available. It was a result of subsidence damage to buildings. The material was used to create the cemetery’s extensive path network.

At first the Waldfriedhof was designed with a heath and woodland character. Over the decades it has become more of a wooded space. The original layout included clearings. These were shaped to fit the existing terrain. For years thirty women maintained the graves. They used local heather for landscaping.

The chapel is simple but elegant. It provides a respectful setting for funeral services. The generous forecourt offers mourners a comforting space. The initial rules for grave plots were strict. They have become much more liberal.

Anonymous urn burials have been possible since May 1976. The Waldfriedhof offers a wide range of burial options. It is far more than just a place of burial.
