You might not think a building like the Waisen- und Polizeihaus Stader Straße would be steeped in stories. But this imposing building in Bremen has seen a lot over the years. This grand complex, built in 1901, originally housed the St. Petri Orphanage. The orphanage was part of a well-established foundation from 1692 that had its roots in the St. Petri-Dom itself. In 1785, the foundation moved to a new building in the city center, but just a century later that building became insufficient for the increasing number of children they cared for. So, the Waisen- und Polizeihaus, a spacious and modern new home, was built for the “St. Petri Waisenhaus”. It was a neobaroque masterpiece, a two-story, 15-bay structure with a horseshoe-shaped floor plan. Despite its age, it also contained elements of the previous building on Domshof. It featured a classical gable portal and a bell tower, reminders of its former home. The orphanage stayed here for two decades, until 1922, when it moved to a location in Osterholz. The Waisen- und Polizeihaus wasn’t left standing empty for long.

By 1924, it had been converted for the Bremen police, serving as accommodation for the local police force. What once housed children was now a home for officers. The barracks, with its imposing facade and spacious rooms, would be a home for uniformed men for the next 11 years. Then, in 1935, the Bremen police were absorbed by the Wehrmacht, and the building was transformed into a proper military barracks. It even became known as the Adolf-Hitler-Kaserne. After the war, the Waisen- und Polizeihaus was rebuilt to accommodate families. Later, however, it was converted into office and commercial space. Today, its various rooms are filled with doctors, healthcare facilities, a daycare, and a supermarket, a far cry from the days of orphans and soldiers. You’ll find yourself standing before a building that has witnessed history, a building whose purpose has evolved just like the city of Bremen itself. It’s a reminder of how human needs and priorities change over time, a testament to the resilience of a place that can serve various purposes thanks to its adaptable architecture.
